Jim Jarmusch’s unique take on the vampire legend features Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as the long-married immortals pondering life and art in this sublime poetic film. Set in an industrial Detroit and a peaceful Tangier, pressing issues such as the true author of Shakespeare’s works, Einsteinian physics and collecting vintage rock guitars give way to a chaos when Swinton’s delinquent sister (Mia Wasikowska) unexpectedly comes to stay.

Alongside the leads there are two great supporting performances by two actors who are sadly no longer with us: the legendary John Hurt who plays Christopher Marlowe – vampire, friend, and mentor to Swinton’s Eve character – and the talented Anton Yelchin who plays the procurer of vintage rock guitars, wooden bullets, and other specialist items for Hiddleston’s reclusive Adam. The moody score is the creation of Jarmusch’s own rock band, Sqwurl, and the opening song - a much slowed down cover version of Funnel of Love - sets a languid tone that persists for the entire film.

A UK/German/Greek/French co-production, it took Jarmusch seven years to secure financing for the film, which premiered at Cannes in 2013 and competed for the festival’s most prestigious award, the Palm d’Or. A modest success upon release, the film has an audience and critical reputation that continues to grow: in 2016 it was included in The 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century in a BBC critics poll, and in 2019 it was listed as one of Hollywood Reporter’s Top 10 Films of the 2010s.

Beautifully designed and textured, Lost Vampires is delighted to bring this under-seen vampire classic back to the big screen.
